Sussex County Satanists Receive Permit to Hold Demonstration on Georgetown Circle

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del.- Another display is coming to the Georgetown Circle - this one in response to the current Living Nativity Scene.

The First State Satanists--which describes itself as a non-theistic modern Satanic group--will hold a candlelight vigil on Dec. 21 in observance of the Winter Solstice. In its permit request, the group writes the demonstration is in response to the Good Ole Boy Foundation's live nativity, writing the vigil is "to celebrate our deeply held religious beliefs and religious diversity in Southern Delaware."

The group says the vigil is planned for 6-8 p.m., and that the group invites "fellow faithless friends and all those who support our country's religious freedoms to join them in celebrating pluralism, religious diversity, and equal rights during this holiday season."

A Georgetown official confirms the group's permit was approved, citing the First Amendment.

In a statement the Good Ole Boy Foundation tells WRDE its proud to have pulled the community together to bring the first ever live nativity scene to the Georgetown circle. The foundation calls the community response tremendous and it's "been enjoyable to see everyone come out to celebrate the true reason for the season."

The group goes on to write, "We certainly understand that other groups with different views have the same right to express their beliefs on public property. We look forward to continuing to bring joy to Delawareans with our display each night through Christmas Eve."

The First State Satanists say the event is an opportunity for the group and the community to come together with love and light on the longest night of the year. The Satanists say they reject supernaturalism and instead advocate for positive change.
