MILLVILLE, Del.- Authorities say an Ocean View man is facing assault and related charges after he attacked a police officer who tried to take him into custody for stealing a bicycle.

Delaware State Police said it happened Sunday afternoon, Dec. 15, when troopers were dispatched to Fox’s Pizza, located at 200 Atlantic Ave. in Millville, for a report of a bicycle theft in progress.

A description of the suspect and bike were provided, when an Ocean View police officer saw the suspect, 34-year-old Christopher Thompson on Atlantic Avenue and attempted to make contact with him.  The officer advised Thompson to wait for the arrival of the Delaware State Police when Thompson reportedly began to walk away.

Police said that when the officer attempted to take Thompson into custody, Thompson resisted arrest and began to strike and kick the officer.  The officer, with the assistance of a bystander, were subsequently able to take Thompson into custody.

The Ocean View officer sustained minor injury that did not require medical attention, according to police.

Thompson was transported back to DSP Troop 4 where police said he was found to be under the influence of alcohol.  Thompson was charged with the following:

  •  Second-degree assault - injure a law enforcement officer
  • Resisting arrest with force or violence
  • Theft
  • Disorderly conduct
  • Operating a bicycle on highways while DUI

Thompson was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $8,501 cash only bond.
