Ten Thousand Flowers Project Makes Stop in Salisbury

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.- A painter from Pennsylvania is creating a mural that will stretch across the United States. Salisbury makes stop number 33.

The Telamon Corporation hosted the Ten Thousand Flowers Project Tuesday at its One Stop Cafe, a food and service training program.

The creator, Tim Gibson, stencils the mural for people to paint themselves. The entire mural will be more than a mile long and filled with 10,000 colorful flowers. But, it's split into small, puzzlelike pieces that'll spread across more than 100 towns.

"Each one I see as one piece of a puzzle so I look at it as painting one giant mural around the country," Gibson says. "Each one is one piece of the puzzle, so the flowers that are half on this wall were from the previous mural."

Gibson says the idea for his project started while he was working on a mural in his hometown.

"I came from a small town and the first one I did there, they brought me on to do it and I realized half way through painting it, that it's a universal thing that I thought could be implemented anywhere around the country," Gibson says.

He says he wanted a way to connect towns and cities around the country.

"But the best part for me is seeing people who've done it for the first time and kind of really embrace it," Gibson says. "I've heard [it's] therapeutic and meditative a lot of times, and it's just cool to see people be able to relax and paint for the first time."

Organizers say the mural helps spread positivity. Gibson started in Maine and worked his way south. He says he's taking a break for the holidays before he hits the road again in 2020 to finish the Ten Thousand Flowers Project.

Telemon Corp. is a provider for workforce and career services that serve Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset counties.
