Miss Delaware USA 2020 Makes it Her Goal to Empower Young Women

Posted: Updated:

MILTON, Del.- Katie Guevarra, the reigning Miss Delaware USA 2020, is making it her goal to empower women, after overcoming many obstacles.

The New Castle County resident works as a freelance makeup artist in Middletown in her spare time, but with a platform like Miss Delaware USA, she says she is dedicated to serving her community.

"Here in Delaware throughout my reign I'm so excited to partner with the Special Olympics, my teen sister queen and I will be doing the Polar Bear Plunge in February, and we also work with Best Buddies," said Guevarra.

Guevarra is of Puerto Rican and Honduran descent, and said she gets her strength comes from her mother, a single parent.

What many may see is a sash, crown and a smile, but beyond that she had to overcome a few obstacles growing up.

"When I was 13 I was battling a eating disorder and depression and my mom was my strong suit," Guevarra said. "She was everything and she actually was the one that encouraged me to begin this initiative because not everyone has a mother figure or someone really strong to empower them in their lives."

That's why she began the initiative Strength In Me, to empower young women. She also wants to remind every girl to be confident in who they are.

"The way social media and television in general portrays beauty is not necessarily relatable to every single girl. But Miss Delaware USA, Miss USA, Miss Universe we're all people just like you," she said.

But more importantly, Guevarra said, "Know that your beautiful, no matter what. No one has to change you."
