REHOBOTH BEACH, De-

Thursday, people in Rehoboth Beach tried their luck at getting tickets to the special premiere of Just Mercy.

Movies at Midway aired the film about Bryan Stevenson, a Sussex County native who  founded the Equal Justice Initiative and won a Supreme Court case that changed juvenile sentencing forever.

He grew up in Milton. Now, a movie about him stars Michael B. Jordan as Stevenson and Jamie Foxx as Walter McMillian, a man who was on death row for a crime he did not commit. Stevenson's new movie focuses on McMillian's case and many others who were sentenced unfairly.

"One of the characters in the film is a man named Anthony Ray. He spent 30 years on death row for a crime he did not commit. He was actually there before Walt McMillian who's profiled in this story, and he didn't get out until 4 years ago," said Stevenson.

A movie that focuses on social and racial injustice, picking the right cast took a lot of thought.

"An interesting thing about the film is that Michael [B. Jordan] and his company have an inclusion writer which meant they mandated adversity, not just in front of the camera, but behind the camera. He and Brie [Larson] have been really outspoken about creating more opportunities for women and people of color and you saw that in this film," said Stevenson.

With all the ups and downs Stevenson and his clients have been through, he lives by one quote.

"I'm still persuaded that we are all more than the worst thing we've ever done. I tell my clients that I represent, but I want that for everybody," said Stevenson.

Just Mercy is now airing in theaters. Movies at Midway will host another special showing on January 9.
