Friends and Family Remember Officer Spencer Wiersberg

Posted: Updated:

FRUITLAND, Md.- Friends and family members are remembering Fruitland police officer Spencer Wiersber, a day after his passing. Spencer died Sunday, Jan. 12, after nearly a year of battling bone cancer.

"He was the perfect kid," says Lt. Tim Robinson with the Wicomico County Sheriff Office. Robinson is a friend of the family and a co-worker of Wiersberg's father.

"I've known Spencer for 22 years," said Robinson. "He went trick-or-treating with kids."

Robinson described Wiersberg as a fighter. The 23-year-old was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer in February of 2019.

In social media, the Facebook page Wiersberg Warriors is filled with touching messages from neighbors and friends that were touched by Wiersberg.

In a statement to WBOC, Spencer's mother said her son showed tremendous strength and courage. She said her son never saw himself as a hero or as an inspiration to others but nothing he has touched many lives "forever."

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church in Salisbury. The viewing is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and the service will follow at noon.
