SALISBURY, Md.- More than two dozen people have died from the flu in Maryland this flu season, this--according to the state's Department of Health.

Of the 25 people that have died in Maryland, three have been pediatric deaths.

Doctors say the best prevention is getting the flu shot. Gail Leamy, a clinical quality specialist at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, said, "It's usually the very old, or debilitated people that have preexisting illnesses or the very young."

Health officials say nationally, Type B has been dominating the flu season more than any other influenza virus.

The same goes for the state of Maryland, so far there have been 9,314 positive tests of type A in Maryland clinical labs, while Type B has had 15,551.

But doctors here in Salisbury say they've been seeing a bit of both.

Walter David Gianelle, owner and physician of Your Doc's In in Salisbury said, "Both B and A are active right now and I would say we're seeing about equal amounts of both A and B. Probably in the clinics, we're seeing in all of them anywhere from 30 to 40 cases a day."

But doctors say the flu is not the only illness causing concern in emergency rooms and clinics. Coronavirus has also been a concern--globally more so than in the U.S.

Doctors say the flu still poses more of a health risk to Americans.

"Is it like the flu, yes. It's respiratory, it's fevers, it's body aches. Has the CDC informed clinics and clinics like us to be wary of it, absolutely."

The Maryland Department of Health says there have only been two patients approved for Coronavirus testing and both were negative.

The CDC estimates that there have been anywhere from twenty to 30 million flu cases so far this season. In comparison, there have only been 13 confirmed cases of the Novel Coronavirus in the United States, according to the CDC.
