BVSPCA and Wings of Rescue Save 44 Dogs from Path of Hurricane Laura

GEORGETOWN, Del. - Forty-four dogs arrived to the Delaware Coastal Airport on a Wings of Rescue flight Tuesday afternoon. The organization brought them from Louisiana to safety ahead of Hurricane Laura.

The dogs from Calcasieu Parish Animal Services, Tangipahoa Parish Animal Shelter and St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter will be up for adoption at the Brandywine Valley SPCA's Georgetown and Dover campuses as early as Wednesday.

BVSPCA Shelter Program Manager David Owens says this rescue mission will not only save the animals from potential flooding, it will also make room for lost family pets who need shelter due to the storm.

"We're trying to get animals out before the storm hits," says Owens. "They've been getting word that Hurricane Laura is increasing, so they're just trying to be proactive and get animals out of the shelter and to safety."

Wings of Rescue will fly more dogs to Delaware Wednesday, next time to BVSPCA's New Castle and West Chester campuses.

"We're just flying everyday," says Wings of Rescue Vice President Erin Robbins. "We've done about 70 hours in the last 8 days of flying in just this one airplane, trying to move everybody, get everybody to safety."
