DOVER, Del. --- The Macy's store at the Dover Mall has been retooled to focus on pickup services and fulfilling orders placed online.

A company spokesperson said in a statement that the move was fueled primarily because of customers' changing habits and use of online shopping, a trend that has grown in recent months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A store in Littleton, Colorado is also being refocused as part of a pilot program also involving the Dover location.

Neither location will allow shoppers to browse through the department store to see items on sale, as they previously were able to do.

"These two locations will serve as Macy’s Omni Service Centers. They will continue to operate an At Your Service Center for seamless in-store pickup orders, Curbside pickup orders, returns, and bill pay, among many other services, while the remainder of the store will be dedicated to support fulfillment operations," the statement said.

The company spokesperson said Macy's would consider whether workers at the store affected by the change would be able to remain at the store in different roles or be transferred to a new location. Should those employees not be considered for continuation, they may be eligible for severance.
