DOVER (AP)- The state board overseeing private security agencies in Delaware is proposing that some security guards and armored car guards be allowed to carry shotguns and rifles during emergencies.

The weapons would be allowed when authorized by either the governor or the state police superintendent. The proposal is intended to boost security in the state in an emergency, such as a natural disaster or an attack.

Only those guards already allowed to carry handguns would be eligible to carry rifles and shotguns. And the guards would have to be trained by certified firearms instructors and be requalified every three years.

The board is expected to vote on the rule Jan. 25.
