FELTON, Del. - On Saturday night the Diamond State Drive-In Theater in Felton showed its final movie. The theater is now officially closed. It was a sad day for Donald Brown, longtime operator of the theater.

"It's a relief that the anxiety of this moment and it's approach are over, but its disappointing to know that this is the end of our relationship with the community," said Brown.

Brown said the theater has been an important part of the community. He said Kent County is losing something special. The family who owns the land the theater sits is considering selling it. Donald said he cannot afford to buy the land, but that does not necessarily mean the drive in will be closed forever.

Delaware's loss may be Virginia's gain. Brown may move the theater to an old drive-in theater near Chincoteague. He just bought the old theater.

But, it's still hard for people like Emily Vandusen to take the news. She and some other folks took pictures on top of their car Saturday by the theater's sign.

"It's really sad. A lot of childhood memories. It's going to be really sad when it leaves," said Vandusen.

For a lot of people it is the end of an era as time has run out for the drive in.

Brown says, "The degree at which the community embraced the drive-in exceeded all of our expectations and if the community has enjoyed the drive as much as we have enjoyed operating it, then its been a success."

Brown hopes to open the new drive-in in Virginia by 2010.
