STEVENSVILLE, Md.- Police say the mother of a 3-year-old girl is facing murder charges after she killed the child and then tried to kill herself in Stevensville on Wednesday.

The Queen Anne's County Sheriff's office says that just before 3 p.m., 911 dispatchers received a call to respond to the Oliver Branch Road home of 43-year-old Victoria Adele Sparrow. Police say she was in need of medical attention after an apparent suicide attempt.

Upon arrival, medical personnel began to treat Sparrow. Soon afterward, personnel located Sparrow's 3-year-old daughter Laci M. Sparrow lying unresponsive in a bedroom. CPR was begun at that time. Meantime, the Sheriff's Office was notified and deputies were dispatched.

The child was transported by ambulance to the Anne Arundel Medical Center. A second ambulance transported her mother there shortly thereafter. The child was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital. Her mother remains at the hospital where she is lying in a coma, according to police.

On Wednesday evening, investigators from both the Sheriff's Office and Maryland State Police searched the home for clues. Other detectives also went to the hospital to interview family members.

An autopsy was ordered for the child and police are awaiting results from the State Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore.

Even though they are awaiting an official cause of death for the child, police have obtained an arrest warrant for Victoria A. Sparrow that charges her with first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, first-degree child abuse resulting in death and second-degree child abuse.
