DELMAR, Md. (WBOC)- Authorities say food left unattended while cooking was to blame for a weekend house fire in Delmar that displaced five people.
The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office said the Delmar, Hebron and Salisbury fire departments responded to the call at 410 E. State Street in Delmar at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. It took approximately one hour for 35 firefighters to get the fire under control.
There were no reported injuries, according to investigators. They said the fire caused an estimated $80,000 in damage to the structure of the two-story wood-framed home and $15,000 in damage to the contents.
Investigators determined the home had active smoke detectors at the time of the fire, which has been ruled as accidental.
The owner of the house and four children have been displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
