WILMINGTON, Del. (AP)- New Castle County is pairing amnesty for library fines with canned food donations for the needy.
The county's "Food for Fines Week" program allows library users to apply for up to $25 in amnesty from fines. Participants are encouraged to drop off a contribution to the AFSCME Local Union 459 Needy Family Fund at any county library.
Sophia Hanson, general manager of New Castle County's community services department, says anyone with a balance of at least $5 in penalties can apply for the program even if they aren't making a donation.
Local 459 President John Spence says canned goods and nonperishable items will help provide holiday meals for some families who may otherwise go without this year and help replenish the food bank.
