WILMINGTON, Del. (AP)- A Delaware police officer shot and killed a dog that charged at him in a fire station parking lot on Sunday evening, authorities confirmed.
The New Castle County police officer was walking inside the Wilmington station from his cruiser when a dog ran across the lot toward him, the department said in a statement.
Police said the officer tried to run back to the patrol car, but was forced to shoot the animal as it continued to approach.
The dog was taken to an animal hospital and later died, officials said. The officer was not hurt.
Investigators determined the same dog had previously gotten loose and attacked at least one other person, according to the statement.
Authorities are investigating.
