BRIDGEVILLE, Del.- Delaware State Police say an upstate New York man is behind bars after a road rage incident led to a fight between him and a disabled driver in Bridgeville.
According to troopers, the incident happened at around noon Sunday. Police said a 50-year-old Delmar, Del., man was operating his Dodge Challenger northbound in the left lane of Sussex Highway. Police said that meantime, 39-year-old, Jason R. Reed, of Syracuse, N.Y., was operating a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country northbound behind the Challenger.
Troopers said Reed became irritated when the Challenger was traveling the speed limit in the left lane. Reed then switched into the right lane to pass the Challenger, but made an abrupt lane change back into the left lane striking the right front side of the Challenger, according to investigators.
The Challenger then came to a stop in the center media and Reed also pulled into the median and got out his vehicle to approach the driver of the Challenger, according to state troopers.
Troopers said Reed confronted the 50-year-old driver, who is disabled and got out of his car with his cane.
Police said Reed got into an argument, which led to a fight in the median and caused more damage to the Challenger when the two fell into the side of the car.
The 50-year-old victim was able to separate from the fight after forcing Reed to the ground prior to troopers' arrival, police said.
All the events took place while Reed’s wife and two children were in his vehicle, according to police. They said Reed's family were not hurt in the incident.
Police said the 50-year-old victim was slightly injured during the fight, but did not require medical attention.
Reed was transported to Troop 5 in Bridgeville, where he was charged with the following:
- Possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony (vehicle)
- Four counts of second-degree reckless endangering
- Third-degree assault
- Two counts of criminal mischief
- Two counts of endangering the welfare of a child
- Malicious mischief by motor vehicle
- Disorderly conduct
- Failure to remain within a single lane
Reed was arraigned at JP3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $40,350 secured bond.
