BETHANY BEACH, Del. - Politicians, agency leaders, and residents were all smiles Friday afternoon, at the ribbon-cutting for the long-awaited Bethany Beach Streetscape.
The $2.4 million project was meant to be finished by Memorial Day of 2014, but due to inclement weather and design changes, this timeline was delayed by almost a year. At the ribbon-cutting on Friday, speakers included Gov. Jack Markell, Sen. Tom Carper, and Mayor of Bethany Beach Jack Gordon.
"It's finally done," Gordon said. "We have been - well - working on this since the year 2000."
Gordon said that the project was done to improve safety, parking, and appearance.
"It's just a drastic improvment," he said. "Not only the safety features of it. But in the aesthetics of it. As you can see, it's just beautiful."
At Bethany Beach Books, Leslie Shuey said that business was impacted at times, during the lengthy construction.
"It took some time," she said. "It took some frustration. But to look at it now. It's so fresh. Everything is nice and newly paved. And all the striping is paved. And it looks beautiful."
