Chestertown Barn Explosion Causes $100,000 in Damages, Injures 1 Person

CHESTERTOWN, Md.- The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal is investigating a barn explosion in Chestertown that left one person injured. 

The storage barn fire was discovered Thursday afternoon by the victim and a neighbor. Crews from the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to Lovely Lane around 1:15 p.m., officials said.

According to investigators, the accidental fire started inside the 50-foot by 150-foot barn.

A man who was inside the barn at the time of the explosion suffered second-degree burns and was transported by air from the scene to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. He reportedly remains in stable condition and is expected to recover from his injuries.

It took firefighters more than an hour to control the flames. The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in combined damage to the structure and its contents, officials said. 

Investigators did not provide details about what sparked the fire.
