WILMINGTON, Del.- Andrew G. T. Moore II, a retired Delaware Supreme Court justice, died Monday at the age of 83.
Moore served on the Delaware Supreme Court from 1982 until 1994.
He became an iconic figure in American corporate law. To this day, his decisions in Unocal Corp. v. Mesa Petroleum Co. and Aronson v. Lewis are required reading in many corporate law classes across the country.
Moore was born in New Orleans and graduated from Tulane University with Bachelor of Business Administration and Juris Doctor degrees. He then served as a law clerk to then-Delaware Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles L. Terry, Jr. and practiced law in Wilmington for 18 years. He was appointed as Justice in May 1982 by Gov. Pierre S. duPont IV.
During his tenure on the court, Justice Moore was among those that helped create a program called Delaware IOLTA (Interest on Lawyer's Trust Accounts), that has provided millions of dollars in aid to underprivileged people in need of legal assistance.
After leaving the bench, Moore joined the investment banking firm of Dresdner, Kleinwort, Wasserstein, Inc. From 2010 to 2017, he served as a director in the Wilmington office of the law firm Gibbons P.C.
Moore is survived by his wife Betsy, daughter Marianne Moore Viceconte and her husband Chris, two grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his sister Hetsy Pickard (Kevin).
A memorial service will be held Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1108 N. Adams St., Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Pilot School, 2018 Woodlawn Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803.
