Salisbury University Announces Spring Break Plans and Latest COVID-19 Numbers

SALISBURY, Md. - Spring break will look different for many students at a local university for the second year in a row. During Thursday's weekly COVID-19 press briefing Salisbury University announced that this year spring breakers will be limited to only two days off.

Salisbury University is reporting that its COVID-19 case rate stands at 1.32 percent, while Wicomico county stands at 4.12 percent.

A slight increase in comparison to previous weeks numbers.

SU president Charles Wight says this is due to expanded testing and with spring break around the corner, the school hopes to keep it that way.

"SU residence halls and dining facilities will remain open. But you will need to maintain your COVID-19 testing in order to have access to those facilities. Testing will continue 7 days a week at SU, even during spring break," explained Wight.

The school made the decision to have an 'Abbreviated Spring Break' with no classes just March 15th and 16th.

Students who spoke with WRDE say a 2-day break influenced their decision and they would rather stay on campus.

This week Maryland announced that capacity restrictions will be lifted on March 12th at 5 p.m.

President Wight says a hybrid commencement is in the works.

"For our commencement as I mentioned, we are planning to have a virtual commencement ceremony for all graduates but and this will be confirmed in mid-April. We are also planning a grad walk where students will be able to dress up in their caps and gowns walk across the stage have their name announced and have their friends and family at least some of them available to participate," added Wight.
