Wicomico Public Libraries' Food For Fines Program Winds Down

SALISBURY, Md. - Time is running out to participate in the Food for Fines program at Wicomico Public Libraries.

The library system partnered with the Maryland Food Bank. People can donate canned goods or non-perishable food items to help clear the fines on their library cards. Each food item is worth $1 and library patrons can clear up to $25 worth of fines.

"It's a great way for customers that feel like they can't come back to us because they have fines on the account [so they get] to clear it and get like that second chance with the library while also supporting the Maryland Food Bank," Wicomico Public Libraries Director Ashley Teagle said.

The collection effort comes just in time for Thanksgiving.

"I just hope it helps us remember the sense of community that's important. I mean, the library is happy to host a program like this because we're important to the community," Teagle said. "I think it's a great reminder that not all of us are as fortunate to have the basic every day resources."

All three branches are participating. The program runs through Thursday.
