BERLIN, Md. - Local elected officials are pushing for safety improvements at the intersection of Route 113 and South Main Street in Berlin.
This comes after a deadly accident on Feb. 6. Authorities said a 73-year-old Parsonsburg, Md., man died after the pickup truck he was driving collided with a tow truck.
The intersection already has stop signs and flashing red signal lights. However, some people would like to see more signals or full-color traffic lights.
In a statement to WBOC, Maryland Sen. Mary Beth Carozza said, "We as a community are grieving the death of Mr. Johnnie Derrickson who was killed at this Berlin intersection, and numerous local residents have expressed their concerns about the dangers of that particular intersection. On Feb. 6, I contacted the State Highway District engineer to request an immediate assessment of the intersection and requested options for safety improvements."
Berlin Town Councilman Zackery Tyndall said the town also plans to review 911 data at the intersection of Route 50 and North Main Street.
"Even at [the intersection of Route 50 and North Main Street], there's a recent annexation behind me, talk of a convenience store. That's going to increase traffic in this intersection immensely," said Tyndall.
A spokesperson for the Maryland State Highway Administration said traffic studies are underway at both intersections to see if improvements are warranted. Those studies will look at factors like crash history and average daily traffic volume.
