MILFORD, De. - A change could be coming to Milford's postal system, and the USPS is hoping for input from the community.
The Milford Post Office was built in the 1960s, and as the city continues to grow, it's outgrowing it's current space.
Monday found the post office very busy, and with a small parking lot, many people had to cross a very busy Causey Ave to drop off their packages and mail. Joy Horne says that in the past, she's had to wait over 45 minutes to drop off her package, and that the small post office has been an ongoing issue.
"Parking is a problem and the retail side is a problem. The size in there is so small, and it's hard on the staff as well. For the staff's sake and everybody as well I definitely think it needs to be upgraded," said Horne on her way in to mail a package.
A spokeswoman for USPS says that USPS is looking to move the retail side of the post office somewhere else in town to allow the mail distribution operation to take over the full facility at 110 Causey Ave. Because of COVID-19, there is no public meeting scheduled for community input. Instead, they are asking for people to send a comment to ATTN: MILFORD DE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE PO BOX 27497 GREENSBORO, NC 27498-1103. The public comment is open until May 10.
"Well, I hope it's as convenient as this is. This has been convenient for me, being an in town resident," said Sharon Parker of the proposal.
While the future of the post office's retail location could be changing soon, residents of Milford said that USPS employees are making the best of their tight quarters, and working hard to get their mail delivered on time.
"The do their best, they're very polite, no matter how frazzled they probably are. They take their time working, helping people, but yes they definitely need it I agree totally. A bigger facility and a bigger parking lot," said Linda Cavanaugh as she left the crowded post office. The retail store on site will continue until further notice, and there's no official timeline on the project just yet. If the move of the retail portion of the post office is approved, it will not impact mail services for Milford residents.
