GEORGETOWN, Del.- The Delaware Aviation Museum and local businesses are coming together to salute local healthcare workers and first responders with local aircraft.
In partnership with Chorman's Spraying and Rickards Auto Body and Restoration, vintage aircraft will fly over Sussex County hospitals and highways Saturday, May 23 at 11 a.m. The event is being deemed the "Sussex County Air Force Salute." A P-51 Mustang, B-25 Mitchell Bomber and other 20th century aircraft like a Tiger Moth will fly over Nanticoke, Beebe and Bayhealth. The planes will also soar over Routes 13, 113, and One so as many Sussex Countians can enjoy the aerial salute to our hometown healthcare workers and first responders.
"We've always been about honoring our heroes, whether it be WWII or what have you," says Linda Price with the Delaware Aviation Museum. "They are heroes to all of us, so why wouldn't we want to honor them in a special way that nobody else can do."
Donations are being collected to cover the cost of gas only. Price says any excess funds will go to purchase gift cards for first responders and healthcare workers. All donations are tax deductible.
Price says feedback to the "by locals, for locals" salute has been incredible.
"It's kind of taken a life of its own because people are so excited about this special tribute that we can call our own," she says.
