Updated: Bicyclist Dies After Being Struck by Car in Lewes

LEWES, Del.- Delaware State Police say a bicyclist struck by a car on Coastal Highway in Lewes nearly two weeks ago has died from his injuries.

Police said the incident occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. Sept. 11, when an 89-year-old Millsboro man was driving a Cadillac CTS on northbound Coastal Highway, nearing the intersection with King's Highway.Troopers said that meantime, a 79-year-old man was riding a bicycle on the same side of the road but in the bus/bike lane. 

Troopers said the driver of the Cadillac failed to see the bicyclist while changing lanes to make a right turn onto Kings Highway. The right side of his car struck the bicycle. Police said the bicyclist was subsequently thrown from his bike.

The driver of the Cadillac was not injured and remained on the scene, according to police. 

Police said the bicyclist, identified as Lloyd Kirby Jr., of Lewes, was wearing a helmet. He was taken to Christiana Hospital for critical injuries. Police said that on Monday, Sept. 23, Kirby succumbed to his injuries. 

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and no charges have been filed at this time.
