SALISBURY, Md.- The Salisbury Zoo on Wednesday announced the passing of its 10-and-a-1/2 year old female red wolf, Midnight, over the weekend.

Zoo officials say Midnight was found unresponsive in her exhibit Sunday afternoon.

Midnight was one of five red wolf pups born at the Salisbury Zoo back in 2008, just one year after the opening of the wolf exhibit.

As the world's most endangered species, a post mortem exam has been scheduled to determine Midnight's cause of death.

The Salisbury Zoo said it works closely with the Red Wolf Recovery program and AZA's Species Survival Program to help manage the Red Wolf population. The zoo is now waiting for recommendations from the Red Wolf SSP program regarding the future composition of the exhibit.
