WESTOVER, Md.- Somerset County will be planting trees Wednesday ahead of Arbor Day as it looks to be nationally recognized by Tree City USA in 2020.
Federal and state officials are joining students at the Board of Education Building in Westover to plant trees. They plan on planting more than 10 container-sized trees on the grounds, supplied by Maryland Natural Resources.
Maryland Natural Resources says another tree planting will be held later this spring on the same property. They plan on planting 12.6 acres of seedlings for forest conservation mitigation.
The county is looking to be the first county on the Eastern Shore recognized by Tree City USA by 2020. Few towns on the peninsula have already been recognized by the environmental organization.
The event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Arbor Day is Friday, April 26.
