SALISBURY, Md. - A Salisbury University coach's home was heavily damaged by a Sunday morning house fire in Salisbury.
Maryland State Fire Marshals say the fire happened at a home on Russell Avenue on Oct. 8, around 9:55 a.m. Photos from the scene showed massive flames and smoke billowing from the home.
Fire marshals say 40 firefighters responded to the blaze. Two firefighters reportedly suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital, and later released.
Officials say two cats and a dog died in the fire.
Fire officials estimate the total losses around $250,000.
A Salisbury University spokesperson confirmed to WBOC that the home belonged the Salisbury University head men's Lacrosse coach Jim Berkman.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal said on October 16th an investigation found the fire was sparked from a power cord to a lamp in the living room. The Fire Marshal's office says they examined the scene of the fire for hours before coming to this conclusion and closing the case.
SU officials say details on any opportunities for donations or assistance to the family will be provided at a later time.
