8 Year-Old Newark Girl Critically Injured After Dog Attack

Posted: Updated:

NEWARK, De - An 8 year-old girl is in critical condition after a dog attack that happened inside of a home in the unit block of Adelane Drive around 1pm on Saturday.

Police say an 8 year-old and 15 year-old girl were in their home when the 8 year-old was attacked by the family's pit bull.

After the attack, the 15 year-old called 911. However, the pit bull remained in the room, preventing both children from escaping.

When Newark Police arrived, the older girl was able to carry the 8 year-old out of the room. However, the dog remained aggressive towards responders. Police were forced to shoot and kill the dog in order to treat the child.

The child was taken to A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital and then airlifted to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where she is listed in critical condition.
