SHOWELL, Md.- The driver of a tractor-trailer hauling feed escaped injury Wednesday morning after an engine fire.

The Showell Volunteer Fire Department said the incident happened shortly before 7 a.m. on Whaleyville Road. According to officials, the driver of the tractor-trailer reported that she smelled smoke and discovered a fire in the engine compartment. She attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, but when that failed, she called 911. When firefighters arrived on the scene the cab was on fire. The fire took minimal time to put out, officials said.

Although no cause of the fire has been determined, Showell Fire Chief  Joe Sinclair Sr. said he suspects it was due to a fuel tank leak. He also said a hazmat team was present and cleaned up the spilled fuel.

There were no reported injuries.
