DELMAR, Del.- Delmar could be the new home of a homeless shelter for veterans if a Delaware organization is able to secure the location.

On next week's planning on zoning meeting in Delmar, the Delaware Center for Homeless Veterans is pitching a home on East Grove Street on Delmar's Delaware side as a possible location for the shelter.

It is welcome news by some in the neighborhood, including Maurice Campbell who has been cutting hair around the corner for almost 60 years.

"If it's homeless veterans, then I am all for it.  They need a place to go and some of them, the government doesn't don't look after them too well.  Especially if they're wounded or something like that," Campbell said Tuesday.

However, not everyone in Delmar shares Campbell's sentiment on the shelter.  WBOC spoke with a handful of people in Delmar who did not wish to be on camera or identified but said they are all for helping veterans, but are unhappy about having the shelter in their neighborhood.  Some worry about a potential influx of drugs or crime into their community.

The above mentioned location is also not a guaranteed location for the shelter.  Delmar town leaders say the organization needs to make the pitch to planning and zoning in Delmar on Dec.17.

If the planning and zoning board gives the location a positive recommendation, the location will be taken to the state level for that approval.  If all goes according to plan during the state meeting in January, the DCHV will be able to make a bid on the Delmar home.  So, it could be a few months before any shelter is opened in Delmar.
