WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. -- Construction workers building a runway at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Accomack County got quite the surprise Tuesday when they found two World War II-era bombs.
According to Keith Koehler, a Wallops spokesperson, said the workers found the bombs sticking out of the ground when they were excavating. The bombs were fully intact, he said.
The reaction was quick. A disposal team from the Dover Air Force Base responded and detonated the bombs on site, Koehler said. The area was deemed safe by 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The 100-pound "M-30 series" bombs, as they were called according to Koehler, were likely used in the late 1940's and early 1950's while the north end was used by the U.S. Navy as testing station.
The north end of the island was closed during the detonation process Tuesday, Koehler said.
