Four Good Samaritans Rescue Passengers After Boat Explodes Off Coast of Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md. - After a boat suddenly exploded about 15 miles off the coast of Ocean City, four good Samaritans rescue the four passengers who went overboard.

Rick Hoenes and his three friends were getting ready for the weekend tuna tournament at "the Jackspot" on Friday afternoon when they noticed a nearby boat was on fire.

"We saw some smoke on the horizon and then it became a lot of smoke. So we pulled the lines in and headed over and saw the fire," Hoenes said.

Hoenes said they rushed over to where the boat was to rescue the four passengers in the water.

"We pulled each one through the tuna door, they all seemed fine except for the captain had a pretty bad burn on his leg," Hoenes said.

Hoenes said when they arrived back at the Sunset Marina in West Ocean City, the captain refused medical treatment from EMS responders. Hoenes suspects the boat had a gas leak because of how quickly it burned.

"There was nothing left of the boat, when we were pulling away the side of the boat may have had two feet left to it," Hoenes said.

Hoenes said it was a day he will never forget.

"I think the adrenaline was going for so much that we were all just confused. Just a surreal experience, you know?" Hoenes said.

But despite the chaos of the day's events, some good came out of the situation.  Two of the passengers on board are getting married in four weeks and invited the four rescuers to their wedding in Maryland.
