OCEAN CITY, Md--You might think the White Marlin Open is all about the big fish and the big prize money, but it's also about scientific research. Researchers from the University of Maine collect data from some of the fish caught during the tournament for research. Brenda Rudnicky and Riley Austin are student researchers and their research focuses on the diet and age of marlins. "We really want to update the amount of research that's been done on a Marlin because to be honest the last diet study, to our knowledge, took place back in 1985," says Rudnicky. Researchers say the White Marlin Open is one of the greatest assets to their research. "Especially when it comes to the White Marlin, we don't have a lot of sampling opportunities so coming to the White Marlin Open is a great opportunity," says Austin. The researchers say they will pack their data in their car and take it back to Maine for research.
