CHURCH CREEK, Md.- A pilot of a small airplane made an emergency landing in a Dorchester County bean field this afternoon.

The pilot, 68-year-old Val Albert, of Fairfax, Virginia, was not injured, Maryland State Police said.

According to police, contact with the 2012 Arion Lightning single engine plane was lost shortly before 3 p.m. A state police helicopter was already in the air completing an assignment and responded to conduct a search. The plane was located, and the helicopter landed nearby.

When the helicopter arrived, Albert was standing outside the aircraft. No one on the ground was struck or hurt.

The cause of the emergency landing has not been determined, and damage to the plane is unknown at this time. Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been contacted, and arrangements are being made to have the plane removed from the field.
