SEAFORD, Del.- Seaford police have arrested a man accused of attempting to set fire to a church earlier this month.

Police said 28-year-old Garry Elmidort, of Seaford, was arrested Wednesday, Sept. 12, and charged in connection to the attempted arson at the Miracle Revival Center Church on Sussex Avenue.

According to police, on Sept. 3, a Molotov cocktail-style device was found inside the church following the attempted arson. Police said the device extinguished itself before causing any burn damage to the church or its contents. However, an ignitable substance, believed to be gasoline, did cause damage to the carpeting.

About a week into the investigation, the Seaford Police Department and the ATF assisted the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office with several suspicious fires in the Seaford area. That's when Elmidort was developed as a person of interest, according to police. Police waited to release the information on the arrest until Tuesday morning.

Elmidort was charged with attempted arson in the second-degree, possession of an incendiary device, and two counts of criminal mischief. He was arraigned and committed to the Department of Corrections in lieu of $20,200 cash bail.
