GEORGETOWN, Del.- A Georgetown man's non-profit is helping veterans heal through the power of music.
Tom Baker founded Frets for Vets as he was inspired by generations of family members who served.
Frets for Vets involves a 16 week program where Baker teaches veterans how to play guitar. At the end of the course, he builds them a custom guitar. Baker says of his eight students in the past two years, all have improved, especially those battling PTSD and depression.
"The ability for them to be able to focus and to actually become a productive member of society again is 100 percent across the board," Baker tells WBOC.
One of Baker's students, veteran Thomas Malin, says the training has made a difference in his mental state.
"You sit down for a little while and take your mind off it," he says. "It helps you calm your nerves."
Baker says one reward is the connection made between teacher and student.
"The part that I didn't expect is when they're all done it's almost like they're family," he says.
