Delaware Opens New U.S. Route 301 Mainline

MIDDLETOWN, Del. --- Delaware on Thursday opened the new U.S. Route 301 Mainline at the state line with Maryland near Middletown.

The newly-completed $636 million toll road allow drivers to bypass Middletown, which saw significant congestion on local roads because of trucks and cars using the old U.S. Route 301.

Drivers who pass through the state line using the new toll road with an E-Z Pass transponder can expect to pay $4 if they are driving a regular 2-axle car or $5.60 if they do not have an E-Z Pass.

The new toll road also represents Delaware's first cashless toll system. Drivers who do not have an E-Z Pass will receive a bill in the mail.

The existing US 301 will be converted to a local roadway, with truck restrictions in place except for local services.
