GEORGETOWN, De.- One of the founders of La Esperanza Community Center has passed away.

Ascencion Banegas was one of the three Carmelite Sisters of Charity that started the center back in 1996.

In a Facebook post, La Esperanza confirmed the news.

"She had an inexhaustible strength in her struggle for immigrants who came to Delaware," says the social media post. "Thank you, Sister, for what you did here. And for what you will do. We are sure that you will continue to be with us and impel us in the tasks that you started."

Some of the staff of La Esperanza says they remember Sister Banegas as caring and loving person.

"I remember always seeing sister Ascension always smiling. I think just carrying that joy that she left behind is what we want to do," says Sara Shultz, Program Director.

Sister Banegas died in Spain, her native country, due to health complications. La Esperanza says that soon will announce plans to celebrate the life of its founder.
