Artist Needed for New Salisbury Mural

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Calling all artists!  The City of Salisbury is searching for an artist to paint a mural at Route 13 and East Church Street, one of the busiest intersections in town.

The mural will be painted on the side of the Bradley Building and it will not be a small project, with the building dimensions measuring about 60 feet wide and just over 30 feet tall at its highest point.

Project leaders say community input sessions were held to generate ideas of what should be incorporated into the new work of art.

"What we're trying to do is tie in the past and the present," said Kevin Lindsay, the city's neighborhood relations manager. "Historical figures that have done some significant things in the area with individuals that are also doing some significant things for our youth to see, so they can gauge what Salisbury is about."

The mural is the first step in beautifying that piece of land.  Landscaping and lighting is also going to be added.  When everything is finished, that location will be a stark contrast from what used to be on that location, an adult bookstore, that was torn down back in October.  City and project leaders want the mural to be something neighbors in Salisbury are proud to see and drive by each day.

"Route 13 is a major route that people travel and they'll see it and we want something great so when they look at it, they'll think, 'oh, this is pretty cool,'" Lindsay said.

According to a city press release, interested artists have until March 10 to submit a resume and examples of their work to Kevin Lindsay at klindsay@salisbury.md.  An artist will be picked no later than March 15.  The press release said funding for materials and a stipend will be provided to the artist who is chosen to do the project. Project leader said they would love to see the mural finished by mid-April.
