Salisbury Summer Youth Employment Program Accepting Applications

SALISBURY, Md. - Ten high school students will have the opportunity to work for the city of Salisbury in a paid summer job.

Applications opened up for the city's Summer Youth Employment Program that will allow 16-18 year old students to work and develop financial literacy skills.

"A lot of kids get a bad rap at times because they're bored so if you give kids the opportunity to prove themselves, put themselves in a good position, this is what this is about," Youth Development Specialist Jermichael Mitchell said.

Mitchell says job openings are available for a variety of positions with the city government, public works and even the Salisbury Zoo.  But job experience is only one part of the 10-week program.

"On Monday's they'll have to come to a class and that class is going to be run by Junior Achievement, and it's just going to have the opportunity to learn again about budgeting, about check writing, about saving, investing," Mitchell said.

Mitchell is looking to expand the program in years to come so that once word spreads about it's potential, it can benefit more than just 10 students.

"I think it has unlimited potential and we just have to keep investing in it and see where it goes," Mitchell said.

Applications for the program will close on Friday, May 3rd. Applications are available on the city's website.
