Dorchester County Selects New School Superintendent

CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Dorchester County has a new Superintendent of schools. On Friday, Dorchester County school board members sounded in unison, confirming Dave Bromwell as the new superintendent.

Bromwell is the current principal of Cambridge-South Dorchester High School. He's worked in the county school system for over 30 years.

Bromwell is one of two candidates for the position after former Superintendent Diana Mitchell announced her retirement in March.

But Bromwell's new role has come without a bit of concern. Parents like Cederick Turner say they're not convinced quite yet. Turner worries about things including meeting state-testing standards and improving school safety across the county.  Turner says Bromwell has his work cut out for him.

"We're going to hold him accountable," Turner said. "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that he didn't do that very well, so how in the world is he going to keep all of our schools safe in Dorchester?"

Bromwell says he's ready to accomplish goals, including those in academics, safety, communication, and financial responsibility.

The new role is good news for Katie Holbrook, President of the Dorchester Educators Union. Holbrook says Bromwell could be vital to stopping chaos within the school system.

"I believe that he has the capability to lead with integrity but to also to set an example with our staff and our schools," Holbrook said.

Bromwell will serve as an interim school superintendent, meaning he will fill the position for up to one year.
