Freight Trains Will Run Again Through Berlin Starting This Month

BERLIN, Md.- Freight Trains are coming back to Berlin. After seven years of the rails, trains will be returning to the Worcester County town in the next few weeks.

"The resumption of that freight service we think it's a very positive benefit," says Berlin mayor Gee Williams.

Williams announced the return of the freight service during a council meeting last week. This will be possible through a partnership with the Maryland & Delaware Railroad and Tyson Foods. The company will use the rails to transport goods across Worcester County.

"It will travel at 10 miles an hour or less," adds mayor Williams. "It will not run at odd hours."

Some business owners are glad to see the train service return to the area.

"It's gonna be cool to be sitting in the store and feeling the train go by and feeling the whole building shake I think it's gonna be shaking up the dust of history a little bit," says Sarah Campbell, owner of Campbell's Farm Supply. Her shop is located where the old train station used to be.

Mayor William says that although it's still early, he's looking forward to the opportunities the train service can bring to town. However, other neighbors don't share the same enthusiasm.

"You have the risk of derailment, you've got the risks of the crossings and you have the aggravation of the noise," says Ron Hippard, who lives by the tracks. "I don't see the benefit for the town of Berlin."

Both Campbell and Hippard agree that the town should make it very clear to everyone the train service is returning to prevent accidents while cars cross the rails.
