OCEAN CITY, Md--A surprise sight was spotted in Ocean City....a manatee.
A fisherman spotted the sea mammal along the coastal bay waters in Ocean City.
Manatees are typically found along the Coastal Bay waters in Ocean City. Manatees are typically found in Florida and experts say seeing one of the Maryland coastal bays is rare.
Dr. Eric May, Professor of Fish and Science at UMES, says it most likely ended up in Maryland because of it's vegetarian appetite.
"When you look at the Maryland coastal bays, you see areas they have lots of vegetation."
Manatees are known as gentle and slow moving animals and can many times be vulnerable to accidents.
"It could be hit by a boat because they don't get out the way of boats."
Don't expect the sea mammal to be a visitor past the summer, the cooler the water gets, the farther south the manatee will go.
The National Aquarium recommends if anyone comes in contact with the manatee to contact them at their Stranded Animal Hotline, (410)-576-3880.
