Updated: Police ID Easton Bicyclist Killed in Crash with Tractor-Trailer

EASTON, Md.- Easton police have released the name of a bicyclist killed in an accident with a tractor-trailer on Easton Parkway.

The victim was identified as 51-year-old Joseph Hickey, of Easton. 

Police say it happened around 12:55 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Easton Parkway and Airpark Drive.

According to responding officers, April Nordine, 53, of Ridgely, Md., was operating a 2007 Volvo tractor-trailer for a company called T&T Enterprises from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Preliminary investigation shows that Hickey was riding a bicycle when he approached the rear of the trailer after improperly passing vehicles on their right.

Police say Hickey then attempted to pass the tractor-trailer on its right while it was also turning right.

According to officers that is when contact was made between the bicycle and the trailer, causing Hickey to fall.

Responding officers immediately began to perform life-saving efforts, however Hickey later died because of his injuries at the University of Maryland-Easton Hospital.

Nordine was not injured.

During the initial investigation, the roadway remained closed for approximately three hours.

Assistance was provided by the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office, the Maryland State Police and the State Highway Administration.
