One Critically Injured in St. Michaels Crash

HARBESON, Del. - Delaware State Police said one person has died and two others were hurt in a car crash Friday afternoon.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. on State Route 5 and Beaver Dam Road. According to police, a New Jersey man was driving on Beaver Dam Road when he failed to stop at the intersection and continued out onto the throughway. It was at that point, police said, that the New Jersey man drove into the path of a a tractor trailer. The two collided, sending the tractor trailer off the road and into several trees.

The Delaware State Police have identified the name of the driver who died as 79-year-old John R. Acken of New Jersey.

DSP said the New Jersey driver was taken to the Beebe Medical Center, where he died. His name is being withheld while police notify his family. A female passenger in his car was seriously hurt. She was taken to Christiana Hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the tractor trailer, a a 33-year-old man from Pennsylvania, was taken to Beebe. He was treated and released for minor injures. All three people involved were properly restrained, police said.

The intersection was closed for about five and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. Delaware State Police said its collision unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
