Cool Things to Do on Delmarva Sept 6-8

Posted: Updated:

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Despite Hurricane Dorian bringing strong winds and waves to Delmarva on Friday, the coast is still packed with planned events.

Friday through Sunday the Ocean City Sportsman Expo is taking place at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center. Organizers say the event will have vendors and activities covering all things outdoors.

"Attendees] will see a wide variety of hunting, fishing and boating vendors," says Josh Parente, co-owner of North Shore Investment Group. "We've got pretty much everything outdoors and it's a fun interactive show for the entire family."

Parente's business partner, George Makres, adds that Ocean City was the perfect place for the expo, which also includes a variety of state agencies and a turkey calling competition.

"Ocean City is known to be outside," he says. "We fish here, we hunt down the street, we are enjoying the beaches, [...] we are enjoying the restaurants. It's just a great place to house event like this."

Another outdoor activity this weekend is the first ever Jeep Rally for Respect. Benefiting Special Olympics Delaware, hundreds of Jeeps will receive a police escort down Route One and then be on display in Fenwick Island.

Along with inaugural events, plenty of longstanding festivals are taking place as well. The 42nd Annual Nanticoke Indian PowWow is held in Millsboro both Saturday and Sunday. The PowWow features Native American food, vendors, and ceremonies like the Circle Dance, where members of the public can take part in the Nanticoke traditions.

Nanticoke Indian Museum Coordinator Sterling Street says the Pow Wow also features tribes from around the world.

"It's a time for the public to come see our culture and to purchase things that aren't around here," he says. "[People] come from the west or we even have a couple vendors from Ecuador--indigenous people from Ecuador."

Another event chock full of vendors is the 41st Annual Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival. Hundreds of people come out for the fine art show, live music, and shopping.

"We have artists from over 13 different states that come and showcase their wares," says Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lauren Weaver. "From metalwork to clay pottery, it's a great place to do some personal shopping or we do all of our Christmas shopping at that event as well."

Just north of the arts festival is Rehoboth Beach's 40th Annual Sandcastle Contest. Children, businesses, and families compete to build the best sandcastle with all materials natural to the beach. Spectators can vote for their favorite creation while other fun activities take place on the beach.

"It is families and teams and neighbors getting together," explains Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Carol Everhart. "They just come down to the beach, start building, create their creation and it's just a lot of fun for everybody."

A bit inland, the National Folk Festival is lighting up downtown Salisbury all weekend long as well.

Many of the aforementioned events are watching the weather (as Dorian's impact has cancelled other weekend activities), so be sure to check with organizers if you're concerned about possible cancellations.
