Jury Selection Situation At Conaway Rape Trial

Posted: Updated:
GEORGETOWN, Del - The 87 members of the first jury pool for the first of six potential rape trials of the former Sussex Central and University of Delaware baseball player Clay Conaway, are deemed to have fulfilled their responsibilities to the Delaware Superior Court. None will be one of the twelve jurors or up to four alternates for this case.

One of the members of the pool was openly discussing the case to other potential jurors, a violation of Superior Court Judge Richard Stokes requirement prohibiting such conversations. It is a situation that has been an on-going concern for Conaway's legal team.

"Because of the intense pre-trial publicity there is going to be the task in drawing a jury that has been affected by it." Conaway family attorney Jospeh Hurley said.

Conaway was arrested in August 2018 for sexually assaulting a 20-year old woman. After charges were filed, other woman came forward and additional charges were filed. Overall, Conaway is facing first-degree and second-degree rape, attempted second-degree rape, and strangulation charges.

A second jury pool has been summoned to appear at the Sussex County Courthouse tomorrow morning. Opening statements are still scheduled for Monday September 16.
