SALISBURY, Md.- As communities across the nation continue to grapple with the opioid epidemic, a new space in Wicomico County is hoping to make a difference. It's called a "safe station," and it is designed to help those battling addiction receive immediate care.

The safe station is open 24/7, and it is the only one in Wicomico County, located in the Recovery Resource Center in Salisbury.

Anyone seeking treatment is able to visit the safe station. That person will be connected with a peer support specialist who will help start the treatment plan.

"There's many barriers that a person can run into when they're trying to get into treatment. That's where the peer support specialist comes into play. They will help the person navigate all those barriers, whether it's insurance, transportation, paperwork," said Executive Director of the Recovery Resource Center Curtis Paul.

The safe station is run by the Recovery Resource Center in partnership with the county health department.

Since opening, Paul said the station has helped about 19 people with a 95 percent success rate of getting those individuals into treatment.

The Recovery Resource Center is located at 726 S. Salisbury Blvd. at the corner of Waverly Street and Hazel Avenue behind the Family Dollar.
