MILTON, Del.- The Milton Theatre had a special cameo Wednesday. Delaware Gov. John Carney took a tour of the facility.

The governor was there to learn more about the theatre and its Renaissance Initiative. Members of the theatre are hoping to raise $2.5 million for renovations and updates. So far, they have received more than $300,000 in grants and donations.

"I'm very impressed with Milton Theatre here; just having this kind of asset and this kind of arts and culture asset here in Milton in Sussex County is really a big deal," said Carney.

The biggest change will be a balcony. Adding balcony seating will increase audience size to about 450 people; not including standing room.

Gov. Carney Shows Support to Milton Theatre Campaign

Along with all these changes, the theatre promises not to lose its historical charm.

"We do not want to lose any of the feel or the vibe that we have in the theater. The exposed brick, and all the story the building tells. That it's been through a lot in 110 years. Fires, a couple floods, some other things and we don't want to lose any of that," said Milton Theatre Director Fred Munzert.

After the visit, the governor said the theatre has government support.

"Obviously at the state level with the situation that we have now, we have some extra resources and these are the kind of projects we like to work with and conjunction with. The non-profit sector," said Carney.
